Procedure / steps for tiling

Tiling is not easy as many think and it cannot be done correctly without the help of skilled tiler. It is a work of precision and has a detailed procedure for setting to sealing.

The first step of tiling is to set out tiles from the centre after marking a line along the centre of the room lengthways and widthways of the floor with the help of a measuring gauge. The measuring gauge helps to accurately plan the position of the tiles, avoid difficult and small cuts that can possibly spoil the whole appearance.

After setting the most important step is to start tiling by mixing the quality adhesive using the best trowel according to the instructions given behind the pack of adhesive product. While applying it is recommended to hold the trowel at a 45 degree angle to get the best coverage. If the adhesive gets thick and forms a skin before placing the tile then it should be immediately replaced. The tile should be firmly pressed into the adhesive using a twisting action for strong bond after allowing a spacer of 3mm for the grout point. It should be ensured that the tiles remain free of movement for 24 hours. For cutting corners and curves out of floor tiles tile nippers are used and for more difficult cuts templates must be made to make it easy.

The next step is to start grouting which is basically after allowing the adhesive to dry for a certain time. There are different grouts available in the market. For cementitious grout it is best to use a grout float to fill the joints. And remove the excess and clean with a clean sponge. As for epoxy grout it is must use an Epoxy Hard Rubber Grout Float to fill up the joints. And before cleaning, the epoxy residue is to be emulsified and cleaned off with a wet sponge. To further ensure that there is no residue left it is better to clean again using an emulsifying pad and mild detergent or water within 24 hours.

And the last step is sealing and movement joints. The perimeter minimum joint has to be filled with silicone sealant. For large floors an intermediate movement joint is needed and it is advisable to check with BAL Technical Advisory Services.

The whole tiling process is complete when all the steps and procedures are followed  and only then tiling is done correctly for best floors.
